Fans have been waiting over 20 years for this film adaptation. We are, of course, talking about the fantasy epic Wicked, which is based on the Broadway musical of the same name and tells a slightly different version of the Technicolor masterpiece The Wizard of Oz. The first trailer is now available, promising a visually stunning spectacle on the big screen
Wicked shows us the other side of the fantasy classic The Wizard of Oz
The story of Wicked begins long before a certain Dorothy from Kansas is whisked away to the magical land of Oz. Here we follow the young witch Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who has been labeled an outsider all her life because of her green skin color. At the glamorous magic school Glizz, she finds an unexpected confidante in the spoiled G(a)linda (Ariana Grande). But fate has other plans for them both.

After In the Heights, director Jon M. Chu is adapting an acclaimed Broadway musical for the big screen for the second time. The stage play, based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, has been running since 2003 and has since grossed over 1.5 billion dollars (via Broadwayworld ), making it the second most successful musical of all time – just behind The Lion King.
In addition to two-time Grammy winner Ariana Grande and Tony and Grammy winner Cynthia Erivo, the cast of the fantasy film adaptation also includes other well-known stars: Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton) as the love interest of the witch duo, Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh as the principal (and weather witch!) and Jeff Goldblum as the legendary Wizard of Oz.
Fantasy epic in two parts: When will Wicked open in theaters?
Wicked will be released in German cinemas on November 28, 2024. However, this will only be the first part of the epic fantasy story, which will be released in two parts. The conclusion of the story of the later Wicked Witch of the West will be shown in cinemas one year later, from December 25, 2025.
