In the 80s and 90s, a film series featuring two dissimilar cops achieved cult status. After more than 25 years, it is to be continued. Today you can watch the first two parts at WOW.Lethal Weapon – Two tough-as-nails professionals kicked off the film series with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover in 1987. The iconic buddy cop team appeared in four films, the last sequel was released in 1998. On Moviepilot, both films together have over 20,000 ratings and an average of a very good 7.5 points. You can watch the two best-rated films in the series today as a double feature on WOW.

This is what the action films Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 are about

The unusual cop duo, consisting of family man Roger Murtaugh (Glover) and suicidal Vietnam veteran Martin Riggs (Gibson), must solve the death of a young woman. The two quickly discover that the murder has something to do with the drug scene and find themselves in the crosshairs of the perpetrators.

In Lethal Weapon 2 – Brennpunkt L.A., the unlikely pair pursue a couple of shady diplomats. Their radical approach leaves a battlefield on the streets of Los Angeles, which is why the L.A.P.D. gives them a seemingly foolproof job. The two are supposed to keep an eye on key witness Leo Getz (Joe Pesci), but he leads the two cops straight to the people behind the nightly chase.

After more than 25 years, Lethal Weapon is to be continued

Back in 2020, producer Dan Lin revealed that Lethal Weapon 5 is being worked on. After more than 20 years, Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are set to reprise their roles as bickering cops. Director Richard Donner, who had already directed the first four parts, was also supposed to be involved. At the time, it was said that only the script was still missing.

Donner died in 2021 at the age of 91. He had worked on the script together with screenwriter Richard Wenk and in 2022 Gibson announced to JoBlo that he and Wenk had finished the book. However, there were many personnel changes at Warner, which is why development dragged on.

Gibson is also set to direct the action sequel. In December, Film Stories reported that filming was rumored to begin in 2024, but nothing has been confirmed.
