As reported by the Hollywood Reporter and others, Mitchell died on February 24, 2024 from complications related to his ALS disease. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig’s syndrome or Charcot’s disease, is an incurable degenerative nerve disease that leads to paralysis and muscle atrophy. Mitchell was diagnosed with ALS in 2018.

Many fans will remember Mitchell in particular for his various appearances in Star Trek: Discovery. In the first two seasons of the series, he played the three Klingons Kol, Kol-Sha and Tenavik. In season 3, he was seen as Aurellio. As Mitchell was already dependent on a wheelchair at this point, the character used a so-called hoverchair.
