Years after the Game of Thrones ending, the makers confirm an old rumor: they had planned the finale very differently. But the HBO bosses didn’t want to hear about it.
The only thing that surpasses the monumental success of Game of Thrones in the minds of many fans is its monumentally failed finale. Season 8 still has many, many enemies in the community. As creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss now confirm, they had a completely different plan for the end of the fantasy series. They wanted to draw a line under it with three feature films
The Game of Thrones makers received a snotty response to their proposal
For some time now, rumors have been circulating in fan circles about the originally planned feature film conclusion that was supposed to take the place of the last two seasons. The fact that this did not happen was apparently mainly due to the negative attitude of the producers at HBO.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Benioff recalls that studio reps reminded him that HBO stands for Home Box Office. And not for “box office elsewhere”.
From today’s perspective, an absurdly ignorant and patronizing answer. Many streaming providers are now producing films for theatrical release, some of them very successfully. Due to the effects of the coronavirus pandemic, studios have released many films simultaneously or promptly as streams.
In any case, HBO executives could have considered the value of three feature films, whether theatrical or not. Instead, they fumbled with an answer that suggested the Game of Thrones makers couldn’t read properly.
Whether three feature films would have been more appealing to fans than the last two Game of Thrones seasons is another question. But one of the reasons why the end of the fantasy series comes off so badly for some fans is certainly the immense studio pressure on Benioff and Weiss.
