Who remembers the series Shogun? The historical spectacle starring Richard Chamberlain was broadcast on television from 1980 and achieved top ratings in many countries. James Clavell’s novel about a European who ends up in the graceful but also horribly brutal Japan of the 17th century is now being remade with the series Shogun. It is now available to stream on Disney+.

Shogun tells a fictional story based on historical events in the year 1600. In Japan, the influence of the Portuguese and Catholic missionaries is increasing. Since the death of the country’s autocrat, tensions and intrigues have arisen among the members of the Council of Regents. The power structure could tip at any moment.

The shipwrecked Englishman Blackthorne (Cosmo Jarvis) slips into this climate. After narrowly escaping his hosts’ mistrust with his life several times, he slowly gains the trust of the powerful warlord Toranaga (Hiroyuki Sanada).
The new Shogun adaptation received very good reviews even before it started streaming. The series has a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 100% and a Metacritic score of 84 points. Time Magazine describes the adaptation as a “true masterpiece.”
