A new star from the Avatar cast is currently delighting many fantasy fans on Netflix: Suki actress Maria Zhang leaves a lasting impression even with her brief appearance

Avatar: The Lord of the Elements sends the boy Aang (Gordon Cormier) out after a 100-year cryogenic sleep to end the tyrannical rule of the Fire Nation as a world savior and unique tamer of air, water, earth and fire. But alongside all the familiar and new names in the cast of the fantasy series, one new actress in particular is proving to be a fan favorite on Netflix: Maria Zhang as Suki

Avatar’s Suki: Maria Zhang had barely shot anything as an actress before her Netflix appearance

Netflix’, as a global streaming service, is not least a breeding ground for the stars of tomorrow and if you believe the enthusiastic voices, Maria Zhang has started her steep rise to the top with Avatar. The actress can only be seen in episode 2 (“Warrior”)
of the fantasy series, but makes a great impression in the role of a fan favorite.

She plays the Kyoshi warrior Suki, a skilled fighter without magical taming abilities, who puts her talents at the service of a previous incarnation of the Avatar on an island cut off from the world: Kyoshi (Yvonne Chapman) from the Earth Nation.

Born in 1999, actress Maria Zhang is of Chinese and Polish descent, according to Cosmopolitan. Her parents were artists and she grew up multilingual in Beijing and with summer vacations in rural Poland before attending university in southern California. She was finally discovered during a stage performance.

Maria Zhang’s filmography was manageable before Avatar: the three short films Continuum (2018), Dear Mom (2020) and All I Ever Wanted (2022), which are unknown in this country, and the web series WorkInProgress (2020) gave her her first experience in front of the camera. Her role of Suki on Netflix is her first high-profile acting job

This is how excited Avatar fans are about Suki actress Maria Zhang

We’ve rounded up some of the euphoric reactions to Maria Zhang’s performance as Suki. They celebrate the actress as a great discovery in Netflix’s new Avatar series and praise her as the best cast member compared to the animated series

In all universes, Suki will always be my favorite. In my opinion, she was one of the best characters in Avatar. Her acting in the live action was definitely perfect in each of her scenes. That’s my SUKI!

I wasn’t planning to watch the live-action series Avatar, but Maria Zhang coaxed me into it

I’m watching Netflix’s Avatar because of the plot…

Fan videos with clips of Suki’s badass Avatar appearance are already doing the rounds:

Girlcrush Suki. [I’m in love]

Suki is definitely the best casting I’ve seen in Avatar so far […]

Suki in the live-action series Avatar is … HOLY GOD, I ENVY YOU SO MUCH, SOKKA! So beautiful!

If the ‘Heart Snatcher’ [parallel to Avatar’s ghost Koh, the ‘Face Snatcher’] had a face, it would be Maria Zhang’s as Suki in Avatar: Lord of the Elements. She was phenomenal!

Even those who are not 100 percent convinced by the acting performance in Avatar praise the actress Maria Zhang:

Fans of the animated series of course know that we will see Suki again in a bigger role if Netflix orders a 2nd season of Avatar.
