Netflix has made a surprising sequel. Based on a short film, a sci-fi thriller was produced 5 years ago in which superpowers were banned by the government. You can now also stream part 2.
For a long time, Marvel dominated the superhero genre in the film industry. But other studios have also taken on the subject matter and found new perspectives. In 2016, director Jeff Chan produced the short film Code 8, in which superheroes are pursued by the government. Three years later, Code 8 was released as a feature-length version of the film, which is now surprisingly continuing on Netflix. This is what it’s all about: In the world of Code 8, four percent of the population have superpowers. However, their abilities do not make them heroes, but outcasts. Hostility and discrimination are the order of the day, which is why many gifted people slip into crime. The main characters of the sci-fi series are the Amell cousins: Upload lead actor Robbie Amell and Arrow protagonist Stephen Amell

In the first part, Connor (Robbie Amell) has to look after his sick mother. Living in poverty, his only way to get money is to join a criminal group. The crew, led by Garrett (Stephen Amell), plans a large-scale bank robbery.
In the sequel, the gifted humans are still under strict control of the state. Superheroes are still banned. Connor now earns his living as a janitor. But then he meets Pavani (Sirena Gulamgaus). The supernaturally gifted teenager is being pursued by corrupt police officers. The two seek help from drug baron Garrett.

The Amell cousins Robbie and Stephen are more than familiar with the superhero genre. While Stephen delivered justice as the titular character in Arrow for 8 seasons, Robbie showed his heated temper as Firestorm on The Flash in the same series universe.

Surprising sci-fi sequel: even a third part of Code 8 is possible
As a short film on YouTube , Code 8 was a minor success that found many fans. It is thanks to these fans that the feature film was made, as over 2.5 million dollars were donated for it via Indiegogo . Although the first feature-length film was not a Netflix production, it could be streamed on Netflix in the USA. The streaming figures are likely to have convinced Netflix to continue with Code 8. Netflix bought the rights and gave Jeff Chan and the Amell cousins the opportunity to continue the sci-fi series.
Although the end of the first part was open and the story did not feel complete, the project remained quiet for a while afterwards. In Germany in particular, the film did not make any big waves. The takeover by Netflix only became known once production on part two had started and took many fans by surprise. In Germany, the first part was exploited by Amazon, which should make the Netflix sequel even more surprising for many

When production started on Part 2, Robbie Amell posted a picture on Instagram in which he also hinted at a possible third part. In the caption, he wrote:
“Hopefully part 3 is warmer”
Whether this is actually a confirmation of Code 8 – Part III or just a gag remains to be seen. The sci-fi film Code 8 – Part II is available on Netflix as a flat rate. The first part can be streamed for free and with advertising on Amazon’s Freevee.
