One of the biggest sci-fi films of the past year is also the sequel to one of the biggest movie universes and is now new in the home theater.
The Marvels, the 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), continues the story of Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel, who gets a lot of support in this fast-paced sequel. The major production with a budget of over 200 million dollars, which fell short of expectations at the box office, is now also available on disc for home cinema following its streaming release.
Since March 1, 2024, The Marvels has been available on Amazon as a fine and limited steelbook edition in 4K Ultra-HD with additional Blu-ray . Bonus material includes a behind-the-scenes discovery tour, breakdowns from the shoot and additional scenes as well as audio commentaries, for example from director Nia DaCosta (Candyman). In addition to the steelbook, there is also a standard Blu-ray version and a DVD version available to buy.
This is what The Marvels is all about
Superheroine Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) must take it upon herself to repair the unstable universe after the not inconsequential events of Part 1. But through a wormhole, her powers are linked to those of Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) aka Miss Marvel and S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) from WandaVision.
As a result, the three women swap places whenever they use their light-based powers, which leads to some complications. Especially with regard to the Kree leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton), who wants to visit all the planets that Captain Marvel calls home out of revenge. But Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) also has a say in the matter
The Marvels: Is the movie worth it?
The Marvels is, in our opinion, an exuberant sci-fi adventure that defies MCU fatigue with some wacky ideas and will leave you with two scenes in particular that you’ll never forget. Meanwhile, FILMSTARTS gave it a solid 3 out of 5 stars in its expert review.
The conclusion is that the titular trio of superheroes do “a great job”, especially Iman Vellani with the infectious, unreserved enthusiasm of her role. However, the whole thing is held back by too much generic space action and the story ballast accumulated in the MCU. For fans, the sequel is of course worthwhile for the sake of completeness alone, and for collectors even more so because of the limited 4K steelbook
