New on Amazon Prime: Captivating end-time western that gets more abysmal by the minute – every Mad Max film seems cheerful in comparison

In his first film after the Twilight saga, Robert Pattinson is almost unrecognizable. You can watch the end-time western in which he hunts criminals with Guy Pierce on Amazon Prime.
After the Twilight finale, Robert Pattinson was mainly known to the general public as a pale heartthrob. However, the actor and later The Batman star has proven that he can embody a wider range of roles in lesser-known productions. For The Rover, he has taken on the role of Guy Pearce’s slightly retarded companion. Together they set off on the hunt for a marauding gang in post-apocalyptic Australia.

The Rover with Robert Pattinson is now available as a flat-rate movie on Amazon Prime Video.

Hunt through the outback: This is what the end-time western is all about

After the collapse of the global economic system 10 years ago, anarchy reigns in the Australian outback. Criminal gangs enforce the law of the jungle and leave death and devastation in their wake. This includes the gang of Henry (Scoot McNairy), Caleb (Tawanda Manyimo) and Archie (David Field).

The trio steals Eric’s (Guy Pearce) car. However, the lonely man doesn’t want to take this lying down and pursues the thieves. In the process, he meets the injured Rey (Robert Pattinson). The naive youngster still has a score to settle with the gang.

You can now stream The Rover on Amazon Prime

The Rover is a dark story that could be set in the Mad Max universe

Like Mad Max, Australia is in ruins in The Rover. Both films have roughly the same premise. A post-collapse world, the law of the jungle and a scarcity of resources for which the survivors are fighting. But while Max Rockatansky remains alone in the battle with his adversaries in the first parts, Eric and Rey join forces to achieve their common goal

The interplay between Guy Pierce and Robert Pattinson is also exactly what The Rover is all about. The backdrop of the end-time scenario fades more and more into the background during the movie, so that in the end only the actors are in focus. Robert Pattinson’s performance in this film in particular showed that he can be far more than just a glittering vampire

Minimalism as a trump card

Admittedly, not everyone likes films like The Rover. The movie makes do with very few ingredients. Few actors, a simple motivation and short dialogs are the order of the day. The goal of the movie is clear from the outset: the protagonist’s car is stolen and he wants it back. This sentence could also summarize John Wick. But the paths of these two films could hardly be more different.

In David Michôd’s end-time thriller, all the individual parts fit together perfectly. The sparse landscapes and dialog perfectly reflect the characters. They are just as emotionally empty. In a completely destroyed world, there is little to enjoy and anyone who wants to survive has to be cold as ice.
