The Neverending Story has enchanted and disturbed for 40 years. Soon Michael Ende’s fantasy classic will be remade into a movie.
Yes, it really has been almost 40 years since The Neverending Story was released in cinemas. The 1984 film adaptation of Michael Ende’s fantasy novel enchanted children around the world and drove them to despair with a death scene. However, none of the sequels could match the quality of Wolfgang Petersen’s first film.
Now a new team is venturing into the film adaptation. Falkor will take to the skies again and we’d better not think about the horse Artax …
This is what is known about the remake of the fantasy classic
The industry magazine Variety exclusively reports that The Neverending Story is being remade.
The company behind the remake is See-Saw Films, which has made a name for itself with productions such as The King’s Speech, Netflix’s The Power of the Dog and the Apple series Slow Horses – A Case for Jackson Lamb. The company won the race for the remake and was awarded the contract.
Producer Iain Canning explains about The Neverending Story:
‘Part of what makes the book so special is that you can go back to it at different ages and find different layers of meaning. So it’s wonderful that we have the opportunity to take on a new perspective that has new layers and meanings. We simply believe that every generation deserves its own journey to Phantásia.
Concrete information about the film team is not yet available. The creative team has yet to be hired, according to the announcement.
However, there is talk of a “global production” for the presumed multi-part movie. In terms of production size, the remake of The Neverending Story is likely to differ from the first adaptation. Back then, filming took place mainly in the Bavaria film studios, in Spain and Canada. The remake has to compete with the show values of more recent fantasy franchises, above all the films and series from the Lord of the Rings series.
