The gangster series Peaky Blinders has enjoyed great success on Netflix in recent years. Now the most important star has been confirmed for the sequel. Filming starts in September.
Eleven years ago, the gangster series Peaky Blinders – Gangs of Birmingham celebrated its premiere on BBC Two. This was followed by six seasons with a total of 36 episodes. Thanks to a license deal with Netflix, the story of the Shelby family gained international fame and topped the streaming charts several times.
No wonder fans were nervous when it became clear that Peaky Blinders would not be getting a 7th season from the BBC. However, series creator Steven Knight assured us years ago that we have not yet seen the last Shelby chapter. Peaky Blinders will continue in the form of a feature-length movie
Peaky Blinders movie coming: Cillian Murphy returns to Birmingham as Thomas Shelby
In April 2021, Variety reported that a Peaky Blinders movie is coming instead of season 7. Knight is once again acting as creative head. He has spent the past few months finalizing the script after having to pause his work on it due to the Hollywood 2023 strike. Now there is finally some good news
As BirminghamWorld reveals, Knight gave an update on the Peaky Blinders movie at the premiere of his new BBC series, This Town, and clarified the question of whether Cillian Murphy will return. In the series, he plays the lead role, Thomas Shelby. He recently won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for Oppenheimer.
Knight says that Murphy is “definitely” back and also reveals the rough time frame for the start of filming. The first take of the as-yet-untitled Peaky Blinders film is set to begin in September 2024. Filming will take place at Digbeth Loc Studios in Birmingham, where large parts of the series were previously shot.
