The big The Boys alternative on Amazon Prime shocks fans. Now Robert Kirkman has defended the grave developments in the superhero series Invincible.
The ultra-violent superhero series Invincible is back on Amazon Prime and was immediately good for some shocking surprises in its opening episode of the second half of season 2. In episode 5, two important characters met their deaths in a brutal manner, while the fate of another character was left in the dark.

Now series creator Robert Kirkman (The Walking Dead) has spoken to Variety about the blatant decisions made in the superhero hit and explained why they are essential for the rest of the series. Warning, spoilers for Invincible season 2, episode 5 follow

The Boys replacement on Amazon Prime: Robert Kirkman defends blatant deaths in Invincible season 2

The Guardians of the Globe have to split into two different teams in the infamous episode of the series, leaving Rex, Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae together on Earth. In the process, they clash with the Lizard League – and the confrontation ends fatally for Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae.

For Robert Kirkman and his team, this decision was all about putting the audience’s expectations through the meat grinder:

We wanted to make sure these scenes had the power and gravitas they should have. We introduced the Lizard League as villains that can’t be taken seriously and then the weakest, street-level heroes of Guardians of the Globe take on this joke bunch. The audience expects a fun fight scene here, but it doesn’t create anything memorable, especially when the A-Team is fighting a real threat somewhere in space.

So the deaths of Dupli-Kate and Shrinking Rae are a reminder to fans that anything can happen in Invincible and that storylines are not so easily predictable. Kirkman also revealed that he is extremely excited to take viewers to the grand finale of season 2, as season 3 is already in the starting blocks:
We’re ending Season 2 in a pretty interesting way, that’s for sure. And don’t forget, we still have to see what Angstorm is cooking up and what’s in store for his character.
