Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen has shot the western adventure The Dead Don’t Hurt
Although it sounds a bit like it, The Dead Don’t Hurt is not the title of the next James Bond film, but the name of the western that Lord of the Rings actor Viggo Mortensen has put a lot of himself into: He is not only the lead actor and director, but also screenwriter, producer and composer. The actor’s love of horses has been well known since the Lord of the Rings films and Hidalgo, and now he is using it for his new adventure. In the trailer, the first character dies after just 15 seconds.
Viggo Mortensen’s The Dead Don’t Hurt is set in the American West in the 1860s. Here, the independent Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps) enters into a relationship with the Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Viggo Mortensen) and moves to Nevada with him. But the outbreak of the American Civil War separates the couple and suddenly Vivienne, who has stayed behind on her land, finds herself threatened by a corrupt mayor (Danny Huston) and the violent son (Solly McLeod) of a powerful rancher (Garret Dillahunt). When the pair meet again, nothing is the same again.
For Viggo Mortensen, the western is his second directorial project after Falling (2020). Between all the beautiful landscape shots, the trailer for The Dead Don’t Hurt already shows that the Lord of the Rings star is not taking the classic gunslinger approach, but is also leaving room for his second female protagonist in his story of love, revenge and forgiveness.
Following its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival last fall, The Dead Don’t Hurt will be released in cinemas in the USA on May 31, 2024. A German release date is not yet known
