At least one scene didn’t make it into the finale of The Walking Dead series The Ones Who Live. A new video shows us the alternative version of the ending.
Over a year after the end of The Walking Dead, the story of Michonne (Danai Gurira) and Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) has now been brought to a conclusion with the spin-off The Ones Who Live. With no concrete plans for season 2, this could be the last appearance of the two characters for the time being. And after the finale aired, it’s clear that we didn’t get to see everything from the end of their series together.
Warning, spoilers follow!
Unlike the alternate ending of the original series, the removed The Ones Who Live ending doesn’t make any huge leaps in time. Instead, we would have gotten to see more of the touching reunion of the Grimes family and a surprise for comic fans. New images and a video now give us a glimpse of the cut scene
Alternate The Ones Who Live ending would have shown more of the big The Walking Dead reunion
It’s an incredibly precious moment for The Walking Dead fans. At the end of The Ones Who Live, Rick Grimes is able to embrace his daughter Judith (Cailey Fleming) again over 8 years after his disappearance and meets his son RJ (Antony Azor) for the first time. This chapter of the Grimes saga ends with an image of the whole family embracing. But a little more was filmed.
Some behind-the-scenes images of episode 6 officially released by AMC reveal that more scenes were shot as part of the Grimes family’s big reunion. Because in these pictures Rick, Michonne, Judith and RJ are wearing different clothes

A video that found its way onto X (formerly Twitter) shows that at least one scene was actually cut from the finale. It shows Rick, Michonne and their two offspring enjoying an idyllic picnic:

It is currently unknown whether more footage was shot apart from the picnic scene and in what context it would have been seen. It is possible that the scene was part of a montage that would have shed even more light on Rick Grimes’ rediscovered family happiness
The cut scene hides a comic surprise for The Walking Dead fans
The alternate and longer version of The Ones Who Live ending would not only have shown us more of Rick and his kids. The scene would also have included a special surprise for fans of The Walking Dead comics, as another behind-the-scenes image reveals

After Rick Grimes left his prosthetic hand behind on the destroyed CRM base, he would have ended up with a new model based on a special moment from the comics.
In the original, Rick loses his right hand quite early on in the story. In issue 127, he finally receives a new prosthesis made by Hilltop blacksmith Earl. We would now have seen this for the first time in the series world of The Walking Dead.
