While we wait in vain for the next James Bond, the streaming launch of the new spy movie starring Henry Cavill has been announced – just two months after its cinema release.
Will ex-Superman Henry Cavill finally get his own James Bond series after proving in Codename U.N.C.L.E. that he cuts a great figure in spy thrillers? When Argylle was released at the beginning of the year, there was a lot of excitement. In the end, however, the movie turned out to be something completely different.
In a few days’ time, you’ll be able to see this wacky agent comedy in your home cinema, which turns many of the genre’s clichés on their head and comes up with a fun meta approach. After all, Cavill’s agent Argylle is not the main character of the story. Instead, he comes from the protagonist’s imagination.
But not Henry Cavill’s James Bond: the meta-agent film Argylle is coming to Apple TV+ with a streaming subscription
From April 12, 2024, you can watch Argylle on Apple TV+ with a streaming subscription. At the center of the story is novelist Elly Conway (Bryce Dallas Howard), who has made it onto the bestseller list with the adventures of a secret agent. When the real spy Aidan Wilde (Sam Rockwell) appears, however, the boundaries between reality and fiction become blurred.
You can watch the trailer for Argylle here:
As it turns out, Elly’s books have an almost prophetic character. Everything she writes will sooner or later take place around her in real life. This makes her the target of a powerful syndicate that will do anything to tap into Elly’s knowledge. She can’t even trust Aidan.
Director Matthew Vaughn, who has already created a successful series of agents with the Kingsman films, delivers a playful action thriller with Argylle that can be expanded on in the future. In 2021, Deadline reported that a total of three Argylle films are planned, sequels and prequels.
Attention, spoilers: The mid-credit scene even hints at a crossover with the Kingsman series. In it, we see Louis Partridge as young agent Argylle, who is recruited by the Kingsman organization. This is followed by the announcement of a (so far fictional) film called Argylle: Book One – The Movie.
