The name Alex Garland has become a brand for thrilling, exceptional entertainment and is worth a visit to the movies for that reason alone. The Brit began his career as the screenwriter of The Beach and went on to write the screenplays for acclaimed end-time and sci-fi films such as 28 Days Later, Sunshine and Dredd before becoming a filmmaker himself.

Alex Garland’s directorial debut Ex Machina created a buzz and Extinction remains one of Netflix’s most sensational sci-fi works to date. After his foray into the horror genre with Men, in Civil War he turns his attention to a dystopian idea that springs from the immediate present: What if a second civil war broke out in the USA from the hardened fronts of the political camps? With a budget of 50 million US dollars according to IndieWire, the trailer already promises that Civil War will trigger a devastating scenario.

2 Civil War features a strong cast around Kirsten Dunst

Meanwhile, Spider-Man star Kirsten Dunst chooses her film projects very carefully. Civil War is her first acting appearance since The Power of the Dog (2021). The role of photographer Lee, who sets off with her team on a road trip through the war-torn United States, must therefore have held a special appeal for her.

Her press team is also made up of exciting stars: From seasoned reporter Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson from Dune) to confident journalist Joel (Wagner Moura from Narcos) to up-and-coming photographer Jessie (Cailee Spaeny from Priscilla), the cast shines with acting talent. Nick Offerman (The Last of Us) as a tyrannical president and Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon) as a dangerous militia supporter also impress in supporting roles.

3 Civil War is finally a movie without a franchise connection

Most blockbusters today are sequels, prequels, spin-offs or tied to a franchise in some other way. But the original story of Civil War stands on its own. This has the advantage that we are thrown into a movie with an uncertain outcome with a fresh perspective. When Kirsten Dunst’s team makes its way from New York to the White House in Washington D.C., no one is safe on their mission to interview the President. Because despite protective press passes, a lot can happen in the crossfire of the dictatorial government and the seceded states of California and Texas.
