Hot rumor: After Star Wars and Star Trek, J.J. Abrams is shooting his own Back to the Future

What is J.J. Abrams actually doing? After reviving Star Wars and Star Trek in the cinema, he could now be making his own version of the sci-fi masterpiece Back to the Future

J.J. Abrams hasn’t made a new movie since Star Wars 9: The Rise of Skywalker. That’s a remarkably long time, considering that the filmmaker could hardly save himself from blockbuster offers in the 2010s. Now there is a hot rumor that is making fans of the Hollywood director sit up and take notice.

Allegedly, Abrams is working on a new science fiction film under the Warner Bros. umbrella, which will be based on a legendary film series: Back to the Future. The rumor goes even further: none other than Dune 2 star Timothée Chalamet is being linked to the project

But first things first: Where did the rumor even come from? Last week, the project appeared in a report by Giant Freaking Robot. The site is known for providing very tantalizing information about potential film projects. However, these rumors often turn out to be just that: Rumors. There’s nothing behind them

Here you can watch the trailer for Back to the Future:

What makes things more interesting in the case of Abrams’ new film is that even the usually reliable scooper Daniel Richtman has shared a post on his Patreon page that revolves around the mysterious project. Importantly, Abrams’ planned film is not a reboot or remake of Back to the Future.

Instead, the film is being described as an homage to the trilogy directed by Robert Zemeckis. This fits in with Abrams’ filmography. He already directed a declaration of love to Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi cinema with Super 8. The story of his new film is set to revolve around a young man who travels through time

Back to the future à la J.J. Abrams: The rumor should be taken with a grain of salt, but it definitely sounds plausible

Is the rumor true or not? World of Reel has asked representatives from Warner Bros. However, there was no official confirmation. Nevertheless, it is very plausible that a corresponding project is being developed behind closed doors at Warner. Not least because of the Chalamet connection.

Chalamet has led two of Warner’s biggest hits in recent months. In addition to Dune: Part Two, this includes the fantasy musical Wonka. As Variety reported in March 2024, Chalamet has signed a deal with Warner to develop, produce and act in further films with the studio.

Warner has high hopes for Chalamet as a Hollywood star who will draw people to the movies in the next decade. What better way to build on this status than to pair him with one of the blockbuster directors par excellence? And with a movie that bows to one of the most popular films of all time.
