There has been another permanent death in The Simpsons. Reason enough to remember the most memorable characters from Springfield who have passed away
Fans of the long-running cartoon comedy The Simpsons will have to take heart, as a character who appeared on the show from episode one died this week. However, this is not the first dramatic death in 35 years of Springfield.
Today, we present you with a chronological list of the Simpsons characters we will never forget, with a few rules: Only human characters (sorry, snowball), only permanent deaths and no Treehouse of Horror episodes, which aren’t canon anyway. Spoilers are self-explanatory
Deceased Simpsons characters: Beatrice Simmons
Grampa Simpson met his girlfriend Beatrice in the Springfield retirement home in season 2. Unfortunately, nothing came of a final date because Homer dragged his father onto a family elevator against his will. Did Beatrice really die of a broken heart because she was stood up? Let’s say no, because otherwise it would just be too sad
Deceased Simpsons characters: bleeding gums Murphy
Lisa’s jazz idol gum bleeder Murphy had been on the show since Season 1, when she got through a depressive phase with the help of his soulful blues. In Season 6, the musician died of a heart attack, prompting his little fan to pay a final musical tribute to him
Deceased Simpsons characters: Frank Grimes
Homer’s colleague Frank Grimes is perhaps the only character in the series who ever pointed out how improbable and unfair it actually is that a lazy, stupid good-for-nothing like Homer has the greatest adventures and success stories. This drove the dutiful Frank mad with resentment in season 8 and he accidentally killed himself.
Deceased Simpsons characters: Maude Flanders
In season 11, neighbor Ned Flanders’ faith was put to the test after his lovely wife Maude was killed by a diabolical T-shirt cannon. This death was particularly tragic for their two children, Rod and Todd. Bye-diddly-ho, Maude!
Deceased Simpsons characters: Amber Simpson
When Homer and Ned came to Las Vegas in season 2, they got so officially fucked up that they married two cocktail barmaids and presumed sex workers and didn’t remember it later. In Homer’s case, it was Amber, who died of an overdose in season 18. Pretty dark for The Simpsons
Deceased Simpsons characters: Mona Simpson
Homer has always had a difficult relationship with his mother Mona. As an activist on the run, she rarely appeared in his life, which Homer reproached her for in no uncertain terms during a visit in season 19. When he tried to apologize, he discovered that Mona had died in her sleep. Rest in power!
Deceased Simpsons characters: Fat Tony
Gangster boss Fat Tony was a tough guy with a heart of gold. He didn’t die in martial mafia affairs, but died of a heart attack in season 22 after Homer betrayed him. Mamma mia!
Deceased Simpsons characters: Edna Krabbapel
This death was particularly painful. Not only because the teacher Mrs. Krabbapel, who was annoyed for good reason, was one of the coolest characters, but above all because a real death was involved. Voice actress Marcia Wallace passed away in 2013, whereupon the showrunners decided to send Edna into eternal retirement and poor Ned Flanders became a widower twice over. In season 25, Mrs. Krabbapel still got a farewell episode dedicated to her.
Deceased Simpsons characters: Hyman Krustofsky
Krusty’s father, the honorable Rabbi Krustofsky, never found his son’s career choice particularly hilarious. Shortly after their reconciliation, he passed away after the creatives announced a drastic character death for season 26. When it was “only” this minor character, some fans felt cheated (via THR ).
Deceased Simpsons characters: Larry Dalrymple
Drunkenbold Larry could always be seen in the background of Moe’s tavern. He had actually been there since the very first episode of The Simpsons. He usually sat with his buddy Sam – and that’s all we can tell you about him. In the most recent episode of season 35, Larry passed away for unknown reasons, prompting Homer and Moe to go on a road trip to scatter his ashes
