After Public Enemies, things went quiet around Michael Mann. For four years, he delivered one film a year, then took a break. He finally returned in 2015 with Blackhat. Although the cyber thriller starring Chris Hemsworth was not a financial success, its focus on cybercrime was able to highlight the facelessness of online criminals.

A nuclear power plant explodes in Hong Kong. The cause is a virus that has paralyzed the cooling system. The Chinese officer and hacker Chen Dawai (Wang Leehom) is put on the case. When a cyber attack on the Chicago Stock Exchange takes place shortly afterwards, Chen calls on the help of his old friend Nick Hathaway (Hemsworth). However, he is in prison for credit card fraud.
Hathaway is able to negotiate a deal with the FBI, but is monitored during the investigation of the case. However, the fact that the cyber attacks were carried out using an advanced form of Hathaway’s own program complicates matters.
Blackhats – the villains of the hacker scene
In the hacker scene, representatives with criminal energy are referred to as blackhats. In addition to blackhats, there are also whitehats, who stay within the law and hacker ethics, and greyhats, who violate these guidelines in order to achieve higher goals. These include the publication of security vulnerabilities or criminal activities. The term goes back to old western films, in which the heroes and villains were distinguished by white and black hats respectively.
