Dream Sceanrio with Nicolas Cage is a satire about fame that skillfully combines science fiction, horror and comedy. It also includes a grotesque sex scene that may give some audiences nightmares
With Nicolas Cage, there seems to be no such thing as mediocrity. Either the critics are overflowing with praise for his performance or he is collecting Golden Raspberries by the dozen. In the sci-fi horror comedy Dream Scenario, the former is the case. But here we also see one of the most grotesque sex scenes in film history, which even sent Norwegian director and screenwriter Kristoffer Borgli running for the hills.
Dream Scenario will be released in home cinemas on June 18, 2024 and you can pre-order the funny sci-fi horror flick now
This is what the horror comedy Dream Scenario is about
College professor and family man Paul Matthews (Cage) leads a quiet life until he suddenly realizes that millions of strangers are dreaming about him. As an initially uninvolved peripheral presence, he appears in people’s dreams. This makes the inconspicuous Paul a celebrity overnight, but the more attention he receives, the more terrible forms he takes on in the dreams of others. Now he is forced to deal with the consequences of his fame.
Pure shame: Dream Scenario delivers grotesque sex scene
On Rotten Tomatoes Dream Scenario scores an average of 91 percent among critics. The consensus is that Dream Scenario is a career highlight for Nicolas Cage and leaves you wondering about the fickle whims of pop culture. On our sister site FILMSTARTS, the film receives a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. The review by Björn Becher states:
How Cage plays the character when she blossoms for a short time through fame, only to hit the ground even harder, is the heart of the movie – with a truly grotesque sex scene as the turning point. Incidentally, this is followed by a few scenes in which Cage – no doubt to the delight of many fans – gives the monkey a real treat.
Director Kristoffer Borgli also spoke to Collider about this grotesque sex scene. He was unable to stay in the same room during filming because he kept bursting out laughing.
Not only was it a shameful scene to write and direct, but I had to leave my editing table several times during the edit. I couldn’t be in the same room as my computer. It was just so much foreign shame to look at.
The scene would probably give some people nightmares, writes Becher on Filmstarts, but it fits in with the intense trip that Dream Scenario describes. The horror elements also increase in the second half of the film
