One of Gerard Butler’s darkest films is streaming on Netflix. According to the Moviepilot community, this unusual revenge thriller is his best work.
Law of Vengeance is no run-of-the-mill revenge thriller with clear categories of good and evil. In this dark film, Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx engage in a constant battle of opinions on what justice actually means. According to Moviepilot, it’s Butler’s best movie and for good reason.
Law of Vengeance from director F. Gary Gray (The Italian Job) is currently available to stream on Netflix
On Netflix: Law of Vengeance is much more complex than other revenge thrillers
This is what it’s about: After Clyde Shelton’s (Gerard Butler) family is killed in a burglary, the conventional means of justice are not enough to catch all the criminals. The two perpetrators, Ames and Darby, are caught, but Darby is released after three years thanks to a deal with Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx). This is where the movie really gets rolling: Shelton wants to take care of carrying out the death penalty on Darby and Rice himself.
The Law of Revenge is a tough thriller that takes a close look at the fact that law and justice are often far apart. The justice system can only provide justice with the necessary resources, expertise and a high moral understanding on the basis of fair laws. If one of these aspects is lacking, justice quickly becomes injustice for some.
This is exactly where the plot of the movie comes in. Shelton challenges Rice again and again in perfidious ways to make him aware of the injustices of this system.
Foxx vs. Butler: The first-class actors emphasize the contrast of the subject matter
The interplay between the two lead actors is brilliant in Law of Vengeance. While Gerard Butler is hard to beat in terms of raw masculinity, Jamie Foxx maintains a highly professional appearance. They thus embody a very different approach to the injustice inflicted on them.
Butler appears unkempt and with a grim expression. Disheveled hair, beard and a lot of bare upper body. Foxx plays an elegant public prosecutor, always in a suit, neat haircut and finely shaved three-day beard. They both want to take action against injustice with very different means
