Disturbing fantasy horror: This is what Mad God is about

In Mad God, a nameless assassin descends by diving bell into a hellish world populated by gruesome monsters, mad scientists and war pigs. On his way through the sadistic underworld, he has to overcome all kinds of dangers and is finally supposed to detonate a bomb in a no less monstrous city, but not everything goes according to plan.

The stop-motion film, which was financed with the help of a crowdfunding campaign and described as experimental, was first shown publicly in full length in the 2021 Locarno Film Festival selection and was released in a few US cinemas in 2022. Not only did director Guillermo del Toro praise Phil Tippett as “a master, a teacher, a titan”, but the reviews were also generally quite positive.

This is how well the fantasy horror film Mad God was received by critics

It’s not just in the Moviepilot community that the film, made exclusively in the classic hand-drawn effects style, has a solid average score of 6.9 out of 10; Mad God also has an equally high audience rating of 69 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, while the approval rate in 92 reviews is significantly higher at an average of 91 percent.
