Attentive Lord of the Rings fans are already discovering the return of a disgusting Lord of the Rings foe from the film trilogy in Amazon’s second season 2 video.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has announced the Amazon launch of season 2 for August 29, 2024 on Prime Video * and released a first teaser trailer of the fantasy adventure. Eagle-eyed fans have now discovered the reunion with an old terrifying acquaintance from the Peter Jackson films in the accompanying additional video

Lord of the Rings return: Did you spot Kankra the spider in the Rings of Power video?

Last year, rumors were already leaking that the Amazon series would bring back giant spider Kankra, who already caught Frodo in her web in Peter Jackson’s trilogy. The new video footage seems to confirm this theory: In addition to the trailer, Amazon also released a making-of video for season 2 of The Rings of Power, in which viewers can catch a first glimpse of the spider.

“The set is almost too creepy to enter,” announces Isildur actor Maxim Baldry in the featurette of the fantasy series. We get to see a hallway full of (spider?) eggs and then the actor walks past a wall of storyboards, drawings that illustrate the story. As Reddit user Alasdair_10 shows, you can recognize a spider there: in the 3rd column from the right, on the 3rd picture from the bottom:

Rings of Power spider: Who is Kankra in the Lord of the Rings universe?

The monster spider Kankra (in English: Shelob) is the last daughter of the “light-eater” spider Ungoliant, who destroyed the light of the two Elven trees in Valinor. Season 2 of the fantasy series could show us how Sauron recruits his later spider-watchdog, who later inhabits the Pass of Cirith Ungol and gets in the way of Frodo and Sam.

We know that the hero Isildur, thought to be dead, is lost in the newly created Mordor after season 1. Since the trailer shows him alongside Elb Arondir (Ismael Cruz Córdova), it seems reasonable to assume that the two of them will have to deal with Frodo’s later eight-legged opponent
