More gruesome than Game of Thrones: House of the Dragon star confirms season 2 moment that could even top the Red Wedding

by Han

Fantasy fans can expect a shock event in season 2 of House of the Dragon that could rival Game of Thrones’ Red Wedding. Now one star is speaking out about the spoiler moment

In a few weeks, it’s back to Westeros. From June 17, 2024, season 2 of House of the Dragon on Sky and WOW will unleash the dragon dance, the brutal conflict between the followers of Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and King Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney). And one thing is already certain: the Targaryen War of Black and Green will claim some victims – and serve up some shocks à la Game of Thrones.

Based on the George R.R. Martin fantasy Fire and Blood, fans have long speculated that the most shocking moment of House of the Dragon so far could await us in season 2. Olivia Cooke, who plays Alicent Hohenturm in the series, has now been asked about this very spoiler.

Warning, a major spoiler for House of the Dragon season 2 follows:

Blood and cheese: House of the Dragon’s biggest shock moment really does come in season 2

Season 1 of House of the Dragon left us with a devastating character death. A flying skirmish between feuding cousins Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) and Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) escalated and ended with Rhaenyra’s son being torn apart by the dragon behemoth Vhagar. This offense is considered one of the triggers of the dragon dance. However, it is followed by an even worse moment in the original, after which there is no hope of a peaceful end to the conflict.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Olivia Cooke was asked directly about that big season 2 spoiler. And based on her answer, the Red Wedding-level shocker will indeed be in the fantasy series:

God! I would just say it’s Game of Thrones, expect the worst. Expect the very worst, and then double that. I don’t know what else to say without spoiling heavily, but it’s heinous.
What that heinous moment is? Before we explain, let’s give one last massive spoiler warning here. If you don’t want to spoil the deadly surprises of House of the Dragon, don’t read on and go into season 2 expecting to be shocked

More disturbing than Game of Thrones? After House of the Dragon season 2, you’ll hate Daemon Targaryen

In Fire and Blood, George R.R. Martin describes, among other things, the gruesome chronology of the Dragon Dance. After the death of Lucerys, Rhaenyra falls into indescribable grief. Her husband (and uncle) Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) does not want to leave this bloody deed unpunished and has his confidante Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) hire two men named Blood and Cheese to exact revenge.

In King’s Landing, the men attack Alicent Hohenturm and her daughter Helaena (Phia Saban), who is faced with an impossible and perfidious decision: She must choose which of her sons the men should kill. The alternatives? Even more unimaginable. The situation ends with the beheading of the young heir to the throne, Jaehaery. With the child’s head in tow, blood and cheese flee from the Red Keep.

Among fans, this harrowing scene is considered one of the most disturbing events in George R.R. Martin’s works and could (if staged appropriately) provoke similar reactions to the Red Wedding in season 3 of Game of Thrones or the burning of little Sharin Baratheon in season 5.

Anyone who was previously completely on the side of the Blacks and despised the Greens for their actions might reconsider this decision after “Blood and Cheese” in season 2. Fan favorite Daemon in particular is likely to lose some sympathy points as the indirect perpetrator of the child murder
