For a sports drama, Gerard Butler had to plunge into the sea as a surfer. He was hit so hard by a wave during filming that he briefly feared for his life
As an action star, Gerard Butler not only regularly puts his life in danger in front of the camera. The actor has also narrowly escaped death on set on more than one occasion.
While filming the sports drama Mavericks, Butler, playing the role of a surfer, was caught by a dangerous wave and said his last prayer in his mind.
Gerard Butler almost drowned during the film shoot
According to the Daily Mail, the star showed a video from the set of the 2012 film as a guest on Good Morning America, in which he got into great danger as a surfer in the sea. It shows Butler being caught by a huge wave and pushed underwater for almost a minute.
On the show, he said:
‘I was down because of this wave, and I was down for a long time, just turning over, and then the next wave came and I started thinking, ‘Wow, I’m going to die while I’m making a movie.’

Mavericks revolves around the true story of surfer Jay Moriarity (Jonny Weston), who wants to conquer the Mavericks, notorious giant waves. He gets the training he needs from his coach Frosty Hesson (Gerard Butler), who is a local surfing legend.
Butler himself was so enthusiastic about the sport that he learned to surf specifically for the filming of the movie by director Curtis Hanson. He then felt the natural force of the sea directly on set
