Amazon is making a sequel to a wonderfully wacky science fiction film that takes aim at one legendary film series in particular: Star Wars.
Long before (T)Spaceship Surprise, there was a great Star Wars parody in the cinema that made fun of the star saga created by George Lucas and became an absolute cult itself: Spaceballs. The sci-fi comedy from 1987 is still regularly shown on television today and delights viewers with its humor.
But what no one probably expected was that Spaceballs would get a sequel in 2024. But that’s exactly the case: As Variety reports, Spaceballs 2 is officially in development. The project is being developed under the umbrella of Amazon MGM Studios and brings back the creator of the original: Mel Brooks.
Spaceballs 2 is coming: Mel Brooks returns as producer for sci-fi sequel at Amazon
Without Mel Brooks, Spaceballs would not exist. From the galaxy far, far away, he has created a treasure trove of endlessly quotable gags. Now he is producing the very belated sequel. It is unclear whether we will see him in front of the camera again (in the original he parodied the Emperor and Yoda).
The new Spaceballs film is led by Josh Gad, who is best known for his voice performance as snowman Olaf in The Ice Queen and The Ice Queen 2. He also brings a wealth of comedy experience to the table. Spaceballs 2 is the biggest project in his filmography, which he leads as the main actor.
Gad is also involved in the screenplay, which continues to be written by writing duo Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. Samit and Hernandez have already worked with major franchises. Their names appear in the credits of Pokémon Master Detective Pikachu and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, for example.
In the director’s chair is Josh Greenbaum, who recently worked with Gad on the cheeky comedy Doggy Style. His most acclaimed work is Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar, which challenges your laugh muscles for 107 minutes. Now he’s following in the footsteps of comedy great Mel Brooks.
