The showrunner of the Harry Potter series has been confirmed: Francesca Gardiner is taking over the fantasy reboot
Three candidates have recently emerged that Warner had in mind as showrunners for the Harry Potter series: Francesca Gardiner (His Dark Materials), Tom Moran (The Devil’s Hour) and Kathleen Jordan (Teenage Bounty Hunters). As the Hollywood Reporter reports, Gardiner has been chosen.
Gardiner is very familiar with fantasy material and reboots. Thanks to her involvement in His Dark Materials, she has already gone through the process that Harry Potter is now facing. The series is based on a popular book series that first came to the cinema with The Golden Compass and was later remade as a series.

The best series Gardiner has been involved in so far, however, is another: Succession. From 2018 to 2023, the drama about the scheming family of a rich media mogul ran on HBO, which is also home to the Harry Potter series. For many fans and critics, Succession is considered a modern classic of TV history.

In the ambitious return to Hogwarts, Gardiner is acting as showrunner and scriptwriter. The plan is to adapt each of the seven Harry Potter books in one season. Gardiner has brought in a very talented director from Succession: Mark Mylod, one of the biggest names in this field.
If we look at Mylod’s filmography, there are numerous well-known series. He has directed six episodes of Game of Thrones and several more for Shameless and Entourage. He also took the director’s chair four times for the second season of The Last of Us and thrilled audiences with the biting thriller The Menu.

How many and which episodes he will be responsible for in the Harry Potter series has not yet been confirmed. However, the Hollywood Reporter writes that he is to direct several chapters. Mylod is also on board as a producer and, alongside Gardiner, is the most important voice in the new adaptation of the fantasy saga so far
