Deadpool is known for not mincing his words. Nevertheless, Marvel boss Kevin Feige had a clear condition regarding the crossover with Wolverine
So far, Deadpool has been able to let off steam in Fox’s old X-Men universe to his heart’s content. Rough talk and lots of violence: how is that supposed to work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which is housed under the Disney umbrella? So far, no film in the mega-franchise has been released with a 16 or 18 rating.
Deadpool & Wolverine, however, has been given a free pass. Marvel boss Kevin Feige granted the MCU debut of the two superheroes an R rating in the USA, which allows plenty of blood splatter and borderline gags. There was just one thing Feige definitely didn’t want in the movie: Jokes about drug use.
How Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy got around Kevin Feige’s drug rule
In conversation with Total Film director Shawn Levy explains:
I’m very careful what I say [about Deadpool & Wolverine], but there were definitely conversations early on about overt drug use.
Feige definitely didn’t want to have a risque joke about drug use in the movie. Last but not least, this is something that the MPAA (Motion Picture Association), which determines the age rating of films in the USA, pays particular attention to. Levy and his team have nevertheless found a way to place an appropriate joke.
Levy reveals:
‘We thought that [discussing a joke about drug use] could be an interesting conversation [in the movie]. Let’s actually write a dialog scene about how we have that conversation.
Anyone who’s seen the trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine knows exactly what Levy is referring to. At the very end, there’s a brief dialog between Wade Wilson and Blind Al, who asks, “You want to do some coke?” Wade then gets nervous and whispers grimly, “Cocaine is the only thing Kevin Feige says goes too far. “

Due to the meta framing, Feige will probably have turned a blind eye. However, we shouldn’t expect to see a scene with explicit drug use in the movie. The age rating in the USA promises: “Strong bloody violence and crude language, gore and sexual references throughout. “
