An animal scene in House of the Dragon season 2 recently had fans of the Game of Thrones spin-off up in arms. George R. R., on the other hand, loves the series moment.
Those who love House of the Dragon also hate it. At least that seems to be the feeling of many fans whose favorites have suffered horribly or been massacred over the course of two seasons. In a new blog post, Martin explains:
I’m not usually a fan of screenwriters adding characters to the original. Especially not when they’re my originals. But this dog was just brilliant. […] I wish I had thought of it. I didn’t, but someone else did. That makes me happy.

The dog scene takes place in the season 2 opener of House of the Dragon, but does not appear in the original Fire and Blood. In the series, two assassins named Blood (Sam C. Wilson) and Cheese (Mark Stobbart) roam the sewers beneath the so-called Red Keep. Pied Piper Cheese has his dog with him.
After a fight breaks out between the two villains, Cheese brutally kicks his dog. Many shocked House of the Dragon fans wondered whether the scene was real.
But why does George R. R. Martin love a scene that is so painful for many fans? According to his blog, the act of violence made him hate cheese even more, only to be surprised again later by the affection between dog and master. That’s exactly what’s so brilliant about the scene, the author enthuses: “With his few moments, [the dog] gave the Pied Piper a lot of humanity. “
