When the first trailer for Madame Web was released, the Marvel film became a meme target. But thanks to its release on Netflix, the blockbuster is now a streaming hit
In November 2023, the first trailer for Madame Web was released and a new meme was born. The superhero blockbuster starring Dakota Johnson (Fifty Shades of Grey) and Sydney Sweeney (Euphoria) quickly became a crowd-pleasing gag reel before critics tore it apart and box office results disappointed.
None of this matters to Netflix, however, as the blockbuster became an instant hit on the streaming service shortly after its release. Madame Web is currently at the top of the top 10 film charts
Madame Web was just a ridiculous meme for many
In the trailer for the blockbuster from director S.J. Clarkson, main character Cassie tells a story from her family history. She utters the now almost legendary line:
He was in the Amazon with my mother when she was exploring spiders shortly before she died.
The way the leading actress emphasizes and delivers this sentence immediately became the template for countless memes. Madame Web thus tied in with the weird It’s Morbin Time! status of the Marvel disaster Morbius long before the film was released. Incidentally, the phrase didn’t make it into the final film at all

Since the Marvel film was released on Netflix a few days ago, interest in it seems to be very high. Madame Web is currently number 1 in the streaming service’s top 10 film charts.
In the plot of the comic adaptation, Cassandra “Cassie” Webb works as a paramedic in New York. One day she realizes that, for some inexplicable reason, she can see events before they happen. During one of her glimpses into the future, she has to save teenage girls Julia Carpenter (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced) and Mattie Franklin (Celeste O’Connor) from a mysterious villain in a Spider-Man-like costume (Tahar Rahim).
