In five seasons, the sci-fi thriller Orphan Black on Amazon Prime Video tells the gripping story of a young woman who is forced to confront the question of her origins following an incredible encounter.
This is what the sci-fi thriller Oprhan Black is about on Amazon Prime Video
A visit to her hometown has unexpected consequences for petty criminal Sarah Manning: all of a sudden, she comes face to face with a woman who looks just like her. Sarah encounters her doppelganger when she throws herself in front of a moving train. The protagonist of the story then tries to find out more about the stranger by slipping into her role.
Without realizing it, she stumbles upon a dark secret. Sarah is in fact the result of a genetic experiment and discovers that there are several identical-looking sisters with whom she shares her genetic material. In short: clones. They are all played by the same actress: Tatiana Maslany, known from the Marvel series She-Hulk: The Lawyer.
Here you can watch the trailer for Orphan Black:
Maslany delivers an outstanding performance in Orphan Black. She easily manages to make the audience forget that she plays all the main roles in the series, Sarah’s clone sisters are so different
The focus is initially on four women who, despite having identical genes, could not be more different: Sarah, Alison, Cosima and Helena. No sooner have they come together to explore their origins than they encounter fierce resistance.
Action-packed mix-up: the clone drama on Amazon Prime is just as diverse as its protagonists
The appeal of the series lies not only in the nerve-wracking plot, which raises at least two new questions for every answer. Orphan Black makes clever use of the potential of its clone theme: Each of the sisters brings their individual personalities to the table, as well as different nuances as far as the series’ genre is concerned.
The biting rebel Sarah always has a touch of bitter gangster drama about her. The smart scientist Cosima brings a dash of science fiction. The energetic housewife Alison often provides a hearty laugh and the psychotic-looking contract killer Helena is responsible for the thriller aspect.
In this way, Orphan Black succeeds in diversifying the mystery surrounding the origin of the clones in 50 episodes and repeatedly surprises not only the clone sisters but also the audience. The series also consistently explores the themes of individuality and community, fate and free will.
