Alien: Romulus is supposed to shock sci-fi horror fans. But a scene with Isabela Merced apparently frightened her colleagues so much that they also had to avert their eyes
Slime, acid, tentacles, various birthing mechanisms, claws, teeth and bursting chests: the Alien series shocks with thoroughly physical forms of horror. The new addition, Alien: Romulus, which recently hit cinemas, is apparently no exception. According to star Isabela Merced, one scene is so disgusting that even the cast couldn’t bear it.
Horror scene in Alien: Romulus pulverized the cast’s pain thresholds
Merced told The Hollywood Reporter about a moment during filming when director Fede Alvarez played part of the movie on an iPad to his cast:
‘There’s a scene with me where everyone had to turn away. Not one person kept looking at the iPad because it was so disgusting. And I watched the scene [completely enthralled]. I was really excited.
What alien scene shocked the cast so much?
She doesn’t reveal which scene it is. So we can only speculate. However, there is one sequence with Merced that stands out for its body horror.

Alien: Romulus is a beautiful sci-fi movie
Merced’s character Kay is pregnant. In the meantime, she injects herself with dangerous alien DNA, which she thinks is a cure. Eventually, she gives birth to a terrifying hybrid of alien, human and a so-called constructor, whose people are familiar to franchise fans from Prometheus – Dark Ages, among others.

The birth scene plays out as a bloody and terrifying horror moment that may have even disturbed the cast. Of course, there are other possible alternatives: As an unsuspecting crew member, Merced’s character is, after all, exposed to a whole range of shocking situations.
