Amazon Prime Video is now offering a superhero marathon with an all-star cast, in which war film meets fantasy. Part 2 still divides opinion to this day.
When Wonder Woman hit cinemas in 2017, the DCEU was still under a promising star. The superhero blockbuster starring Gal Gadot, which had been in development for 21 years, not only made the box office ring, but also gathered a loyal fan base behind it. The situation was less rosy for the sequel Wonder Woman 1984, which was released three years later. You can now stream both films on Amazon Prime Video with a subscription
Fantasy thriller Wonder Woman: Thrilling superhero action with Gal Gadot and Chris Pine
The Amazon Diane (Gadot) has been trained as a warrior for centuries on her home island of Themyscira. In 1918, however, the island, which is populated exclusively by women, is found by the male spy Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Trevor is eventually able to convince Diane to support him in the fight against the Germans in the First World War.
With Wonder Woman, Patty Jenkins has created a thrilling genre hybrid of war inferno and superhero fantasy with a rousing story and gripping action. According to Box Office Mojo, the first part grossed a whopping 822 million US dollars at the global box office, paying off a budget of over 140 million dollars and the long development history of the film, which spanned decades. The press also celebrated the film with a strong 93 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes .
Wonder Woman 1984 was unable to build on this success
Wonder Woman 1984 was unable to build on this success. The film suffered massively under the influence of the coronavirus pandemic in 2020 and 2021, which is why the sequel was initially released in streaming and was delayed in cinemas. However, it did not even come close to the figures achieved by the first movie. Box Office Mojo counts a worldwide box office result of around 170 million US dollars.

For the press, too, the sequel fell short of the high expectations of the first part. On Rotten Tomatoes Wonder Woman 1984 only received a review score of 57 percent. However, the fans were more conciliatory in some cases and still gave it a decent audience score of 73 percent.
And that’s what the sequel is about: in 1984, Diane works as an archaeologist in a museum in Washington DC, where she comes into contact with a strange artifact that is supposed to grant wishes. Naturally, all kinds of dubious characters are after the yellow gemstone, such as the power-hungry Maxwell Lord (Pedro Pascal) or the inconspicuous Cheetah (Kristen Wiig).
