For six years, Netflix has been sitting on the rights to a fantasy epic. Now the film adaptation of the epic novel series is finally set to begin – with Barbie director Greta Gerwig.
Two weeks ago, the second season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power ended and we are curious to see what Amazon Prime Video will do next with the fantasy series. However, the competition is not sleeping: Netflix is currently planning its own epic, based on a no less well-known template: Narnia.
The seven Narnia novels by C.S. Lewis are probably among the most famous fantasy works of all, along with Tolkien’s Middle-earth saga. After the film adaptation was abandoned after three parts, Netflix is now announcing a new start. The streamer already secured the rights to the original six years ago.
Fantasy remake on Netflix: Greta Gerwig’s Narnia is finally scheduled to start shooting in January 2025
Is the Narnia reboot coming to Netflix or not? With such a long wait, this question is entirely justified. However, there is now good news: according to the industry site Production List, filming is scheduled to begin in January 2025 – and in no lesser country than New Zealand.

At this point, fantasy fans should pay attention, because Peter Jackson’s legendary Lord of the Rings trilogy was also shot here. And it draws heavily from the diverse and breathtaking landscapes that New Zealand has to offer. Apparently, Netflix also wants to blow our minds with such a visual onslaught.
For the time being, the production list only mentions a Narnia movie directed by Greta Gerwig. Based on earlier reports, the Barbie director is also supposed to implement the sequel. It is unclear at this point whether parts 1 and 2 will actually be shot back to back.
