New on Amazon Prime: one of the best sci-fi time travel movies ever

by Dennis

One of the best time travel sci-fi movies has recently been added to Amazon Prime Video. Denzel Washington, star of Gladiator 2, plays the lead role.

When we think of the best time travel in cinematic history, films like 12 Monkeys, Terminator and Back to the Future probably come to mind first. One of the less obvious candidates would be Déjà Vu, Tony Scott’s breathless sci-fi action thriller starring Gladiator 2 star Denzel Washington.

The time travel here is on a rather small scale. Nevertheless, a lot is at stake, as the opening sequence with a gigantic explosion proves. Déjà Vu – Race Against Time has recently started streaming on Amazon Prime Video. We highly recommend this underrated Scott/Washington collaboration.

Time travel, conspiracies and lots of action in Déjà Vu

The story of Déjà Vu takes place in New Orleans. 543 people are killed in an attack on a ferry. The investigation is then taken over by FBI agents McCready (Bruce Greenwood) and Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer), working together with local ATF agent Carlin (Denzel Washington).

You can watch the trailer for Déjà Vu here:

It uses a modern, secret technology that can create a wormhole in a limited field of observation. This allows the team to look four days and six hours into the past, but not jump back or forth. But then Carlin finds out that he can manipulate the course of time.

A thrilling sci-fi thriller between Vertigo and Tenet

Like many films of its kind, Déjà Vu works best when you don’t question the logic behind the events shown too much, but simply let yourself be carried away by the exciting and emotional story. In this respect, Tony Scott delivers without compromise. Déjà Vu is one of his best films.

The deeper Carlin delves into the past, the more complex the situation becomes. More and more perspectives come to light that change his view of things, not to mention a love story that develops between him and the mysterious Claire (Paula Patton). The result is a nerve-wracking thriller between Vertigo – From the Realm of the Dead and Tenet.
