8 years after Moana, the Disney heroine is returning to the big screen. The fantasy sequel is already breaking advance ticket sales records.
After Disney released the Pixar hit Inside Out 2 this summer, which has already become the most successful film of the year worldwide, the mouse company’s next phenomenon is already in the starting blocks, and it’s likely to make the tills ring just as loudly.
The talk is of Vaiana 2, which is supposed to continue the adventures of the heroine of the same name, who already thrilled young and old animation fans in 2016. In any case, the sequel with Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson has already broken a record.
“Moana Apocalypse”: Fantasy sequel Vaiana 2 breaks advance sales records
As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, official advance ticket sales for Vaiana 2 began in the US on October 28, 2024. On the first day, more tickets were sold than for any other animated film in 2024. This allowed Vaiana 2 to outshine even Everything’s Gonna Be Fine.
Even outside of animated entertainment, the film landed in fourth place after Deadpool & Wolverine, Wicked and Dune: Part Two. Cinema operators in the US joked about the incident, calling it the “Moanapocalypse” in reference to the English original title of the film – Moana 2.

And this is what it’s about: Vaiana 2 is again about the eponymous heroine (Cravalho), who lives on the Polynesian island of Motonui. In the first part, she had to convince the narcissistic demigod Maui (Johnson) to return a stolen artifact and thus restore peace. In the process, a surprising friendship developed.
In the sequel, three years later, Vaiana comes into contact with her ancestors and wants to bring her people and the sea into harmony. This takes her once more onto the high seas, together with Maui and an unusual sailing crew, to search for a mysterious island where a devastating curse must be broken.
