While the future of Kevin Costner’s four-part Western saga Horizon remains uncertain for the time being, it is now to be expanded to include its own documentary.
This year, Kevin Costner made his dream of his own epic Western saga in cinemas come true. With Horizon, the first part of his planned four-part series started on the big screen, for which he even ignored the hit series Yellowstone. However, while the critics had few good words to say about the drama, the audience was also slow to follow suit and, with around 38 million US dollars worldwide (via Box Office Mojo), was nowhere near the desired result.
As a result, part 2 of the series was recently postponed in the USA, so that it will not find its way into cinemas in Germany until next year either. It is therefore all the more surprising that the Horizon series is now apparently to be extended by a further part.
Kevin Costner’s Western saga Horizon is to get its own documentary
As the reliable industry newsletter Puck writes, a documentary is currently being planned that takes a look behind the scenes of Costner’s epic Western saga. This is to be developed by Costner’s WME, but has not yet found a streaming service. According to Puck, HBO’s in-house streamer Max has expressed interest in the project, which also offers the first Horizon installment for streaming in the U.S.

This would give Costner’s Horizon saga at least one more film after Part 2 ‒ even if it’s not the one the actor and director had initially planned. Filming for Horizon 3 and 4 is said to have already started in May of this year, but has since had to be paused. The saga’s future is uncertain.
Horizon 2 was originally supposed to be released in German cinemas on November 7, 2024. The new theatrical release date for the Western sequel in this country is now set for six months later, on April 4, 2025. It is not yet clear when the Horizon documentary will be released.
