James Cameron has not only been working on the sci-fi epic Avatar: The Way of Water in recent years. There is still hope for part 2 of Alita: Battle Angel.
With Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron once again proves himself to be the king of the box office, breaking one record after another. The sequel he directed has grossed over 2.3 billion US dollars. By contrast, he had less luck as a producer with the ambitious science fiction film Alita: Battle Angel.
Released in 2019, the film adaptation of the manga Battle Angel Alita was one of Cameron’s big passion projects. He had wanted to bring the story of the eponymous cyborg warrior to the screen since the early 1990s. Although the finished film was quite good, it did not do well at the box office.
Alita: Battle Angel new on Netflix: Hope for part 2 of the sci-fi movie is not lost yet
With a budget between 150 and 200 million US dollars (excluding marketing costs), Alita: Battle Angel has grossed 405 million US dollars, as can be read at Box Office Mojo. That sounds like a lot of money. However, it was not enough for a resounding success. Nevertheless, hopes for part 2 have not yet been dashed. On the contrary: shortly before the release of Avatar 2, there was a promising update on Alita 2.

At the premiere of Avatar: The Way of Water, Cameron’s regular producer Jon Landau was asked about future projects outside the Avatar series. Landau then talked about the sequel to Alita: Battle Angel.
Well, there is a little movie called Alita: Battle Angel that we would love to go back to and do a sequel to, and I have been talking to [director] Robert [Rodriguez] about it and hopefully that will come to fruition.
