In just a few weeks, Disney will continue one of its biggest box office hits. Eight years later, the fantasy adventure is still breaking records – in streaming.

With a worldwide box office gross of almost 700 million US dollars, Disney’s 2016 release of Moana was an incredible box office hit, which is not only to be followed by its own live-action adaptation, but also by a second part on the big screen in just a few weeks.

Eight years after its release, the love for the fantasy adventure starring Dwayne Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho has not yet waned. In fact, the movie is still breaking records – in Disney+’s streaming program.

Over 80 billion minutes: Vaiana is the most successful movie on Disney+ of all time

As Bloomberg reports, Moana is the most successful film on Disney+ since the streaming service launched in 2019. The fantasy adventure has now been streamed for over 80 billion minutes, which is the equivalent of 748 million views. This puts Moana ahead of numerous other successful Disney productions. Even Marvel and Star Wars don’t stand a chance.

According to Bloomberg, the film is also one of the most successful titles in the streaming context across all platforms. And it looks like Disney can also expect record-breaking numbers with the sequel to Vaiana 2. On its first day of ticket sales, the fantasy sequel sold more tickets than any other animated film in 2024.

In this respect, Vaiana 2 even outperforms Everything Is Headed, the most successful film of the year so far. It would come as no surprise if Moana 2 were to take the title at the end of the year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the fantasy sequel is expected to gross up to 135 million US dollars in its first five days.
