A series is currently fighting its way to the top of the Netflix charts that has already survived the planned cancellation twice. The story revolves around a special unit.
What doesn’t kill you makes you harder. This saying may also apply to fan communities. Take the action series S.W.A.T., for example: twice already, the story about members of a US police special unit has been on the brink of being canceled. And both times, it was saved. Fan solidarity is now so strong that the series has made it to number 3 on the Netflix charts.
3rd place on Netflix: That’s what S.W.A.T. is about
S.W.A.T. revolves around a department of the so-called Special Weapons And Tactics unit (S.W.A.T.) of the Los Angeles police. It consists of elite officers who are deployed in particular to deal with crimes such as hostage-taking, terrorism and extreme gang violence. The series centers on Hondo (Shemar Moore), who leads the department’s 20 squad. He was born in L.A. and is deeply rooted in the city’s neighborhoods.

The action series S.W.A.T. has already been canceled twice.
S.W.A.T. has been running on the US channel CBS since 2017. After the original broadcast of the sixth season, which recently ended on Netflix, the series was canceled in 2023. Surprisingly, the channel reversed the cancellation only days later and confirmed the green light for a seventh and final season.
But the second planned end was also averted. While season 7 was still airing in the US, S.W.A.T. was renewed for an eighth season, which finally premiered on CBS in October 2024. Budget issues were the reason for the planned termination of the series. According to a writer’s Reddit post, “painful cuts” were made to ensure the production continued.
