After two Thor films, fans turned on Taika Waititi as the new director for the Marvel series. Then he completely changed the character and the rest is history.
Fans of big franchises can sometimes be the harshest critics when it comes to the smallest changes to their beloved brands. Taika Waititi also experienced this when he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as the director of Thor 3: Ragnarok. Even though not everyone was happy with the development of Chris Hemsworth’s god of thunder, he ultimately completely changed the character with mostly positive feedback.
Taika Waititi was met with hostility from fans as the new Marvel director
In a new video interview with Entertainment Weekly, Waititi talked about how he had to deal with extremely aggressive Marvel fans years ago:
That really launched me into the nerdosphere, if you will. I was living a really nice, peaceful life, and as I did that, the nerds came after me. They were like, ‘This guy’s going to ruin it. He’s going to ruin Thor!’ I was like, ‘How, again?’ And they said, ‘He’s going to ruin this for everyone, Thor is so cool!’ And I told them on Twitter – before I left Twitter – I said, ‘You don’t know what you want until I give it to you.

With Thor 3, the director has completely turned the MCU hero around and made him appear funnier and more self-deprecating than ever. To do this, he was able to rely completely on the comedic talent of Chris Hemsworth, which had hardly been used before. This makes the third Thor installment a drastic change of course that was very well received by many fans in 2017.
