When it comes to the biggest science fiction franchises in the series genre, Star Trek or even Star Wars and Doctor Who may come to mind first. However, the Stargate universe, which dominated the sci-fi genre on television like no other in the late 90s and early 2000s, is often forgotten.
Based on Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi blockbuster Stargate, the series sequel Stargate SG-1 established a huge TV franchise with several films and 5 series. The sci-fi series, which spans a total of 10 seasons, even surpasses most Star Trek shows with a rating of 7.6 from the Moviepilot community. This is what Stargate SG-1 is about: Set in the military sci-fi genre, the series follows the adventures of an elite unit of the US Air Force that explores alien worlds in space and protects Earth from extraterrestrial threats. And they do this with the help of stargates, which were built by an ancient species and connect numerous planets in the galaxy (via a giant dial).
The SG-1 team under Colonel Jack O’Neill (Richard Dean Anderson) – and later Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder) – experiences numerous adventures over the course of 10 seasons, encountering alien species such as the Goa’uld, replicators, Ancients and the Ori.

The 214 episodes of SG-1 are not all that the Stargate franchise has to offer. While you can watch the original series for free on Prime Video (even without a subscription), you can find all the other series and movies in the sci-fi universe on the paid Amazon channel MGM+.
These include the spin-off series Stargate: Atlantis (5 seasons) and Stargate Universe (2 seasons), as well as the direct-to-video films Stargate: The Truth Source and Stargate: Continuum, and the miniseries Stargate Origins. The animated series Stargate: Infinity from 2002, which was not released in Germany for over 20 years, has been available on MGM+ for some time now, and can be seen in German for the first time.
The future of the Stargate series: Is Amazon planning a sci-fi reboot?
The franchise has been dormant for six years now. Since the mini-webseries Stargate: Origins in 2018, fans of the Stargate saga have been waiting in vain for a sequel. Since the Stargate owner MGM was sold in the meantime, the rights now lie with Amazon, where a reboot of the series could be created in the future. So far, there are no concrete plans for new series or films.
