Which new series on Disney+ were really worth watching in 2024? The ranking shows the top-rated new additions, which include much more than just Star Wars and Marvel.
After the best series on Disney+ in 2023, we also want to break down for you which series highlights shaped the streaming service’s year in 2024. To do that, we looked at the highest ratings on Moviepilot and ranked the series accordingly in ascending order.
To be included in the selection of the 10 best series in 2024 on Disney+, productions had to have been released between January 1 and December 31, 2024, and collect at least 25 ratings. Both Disney+ original productions and series from other broadcasters that launched exclusively on Disney+ in Germany were eligible. In the case of equal ratings, the invisible decimal places counted when it came to placement.
These are the best series on Disney+ in 2024
Neither newly launched series like Star Wars: The Acolyte or Marvel’s Echo nor the fantasy productions Pauline and Renegade Nell were able to prevail in 2024. The crime series Death and Other Details also just missed out on the top 10. So the Disney+ ranking of the best series of 2024 now looks like this. (Data as of December 20, 2024)
10th best Disney+ series of 2024: Shardlake
This year, the series Shardlake provided crime entertainment of a more unusual kind on Disney+: namely, in a historical setting. The lawyer Matthew Shardlake (Arthur Hughes) works as a detective for Thomas Cromwell (Sean Bean) in the times of Henry VIII, for example to solve monastery murders in England and thus ensure justice under the crown.
9th place among the best Disney+ series of 2024: Star Wars: Tales of the Empire
After Disney+ miniseries like Star Wars: Visions (2021) and Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi (2022), Star Wars: Tales of the Empire is the latest foray into the animated expanses of the galaxy. The series focuses on the dark side of the Force in six episodes and stars night nurse Morgan Elsbeth and ex-Jedi Barriss Offee.
8th best Disney+ series of 2024: Agatha All Along
After WandaVision, we return to Westview to experience the story of the evil witch Agatha Harkness (Kathryn Hahn). The villain creates a coven to unravel several MCU secrets and pass the tests of the dangerous witchcraft path – as well as to correct three Marvel problems along the way.
7th best Disney+ series of 2024: Star Wars – Skeleton Crew
Skeleton Crew accidentally sends a group of children on a galactic adventure with a new Star Wars approach. Catapulted into the distance on a found spaceship, they meet pirates and the mysterious force user Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law), who wants to help them find their way home. But are his motives really only selfless? Although the last Star Wars series of the year didn’t launch until December, it was already popular enough with families and fans to make the top 10 Disney+ series of 2024.
6. Becoming Karl Lagerfeld
Daniel Brühl gives an outstanding performance as the famous German fashion designer in the Disney+ series Becoming Karl Lagerfeld. However, asserting himself against French competitors who only smile at him is just as much of a challenge for Kaiser Karl and his prêt-à-porter fashion as his romantic relationships.
5th best Disney+ series of 2024: Under the Bridge
Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) and Riley Keough (Daisy Jones and The Six) are investigating the 1997 case of a 14-year-old girl who did not return from a nighttime party. Eight peers of the same age are accused of murdering her. The crime series Under the Bridge is based on true events.
4th place for best Disney+ series in 2024: Rivals
The British series Rivals only became an insider tip on Disney+ after its launch in October. The rivals of the title, from Jilly Copper’s book, are former athlete and politician Rupert Campbell-Black (Alex Hassell) and TV executive Tony Baddingham (David Tennant), who, as unwelcome neighbors with influence and wealth, plunge their surroundings into chaos.
3rd place best Disney+ series 2024: The Artful Dodger
Right at the beginning of the year, The Artful Dodger tied in with the story of Oliver Twist – with a twist: the eponymous Dodger aka Jack Dawkins (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) once led the gang of thieves of Fagin (David Thewlis), whom Charles Dickens’ hero joined. Now an adult, he leads a double life as a master thief and surgeon in Australia. However, he cannot shake off his criminal past there either, as old acquaintances reappear on the scene.
X-Men ’97 was released in the spring of 2024 and quickly became an insider tip. The 10 short episodes continue the animated series X-Men, which ended in 1997, and pick up directly where it left off: Wolverine, Storm, Jean, Morph, Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Bishop and Jubilee are suddenly without leadership. Can Magneto do anything against the supervillain Mister Sinister and will Charles Xavier’s dream of a world of humans and mutants with equal rights come true after all?
1st place in the best Disney+ series 2024: Shogun
After Shogun already topped Moviepilot’s community list of all 2024 series highlights, it’s no surprise that the adventure in feudal Japan has also taken first place among Disney+ series. The adaptation of James Clavell’s novel sees the navigator John Blackthorn and his ship in 1600 caught up in a web of conflict-riddled intrigue that he only begins to grasp slowly. 2 more seasons have already been ordered after the surprise success and 18 Emmys won (!). A series that no one should miss in 2024.
