For horror fans, 2025 begins with a real blockbuster: Wolf Man resurrects a creature that has been terrifying cinema audiences for 83 years. And Saw maker Leigh Whannell is responsible.
Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? Billions of people, that’s the answer. For centuries, the werewolf myth has instilled terror in young and old alike. In 1941, the classic film The Wolf Man brought it to the screen. And more than 80 years later, a star is now opening a new chapter in the horror legend: Wolf Man is already going through your mind and legs. Just watch the trailer.
Wolf Man revolves around Blake (Christopher Abbott), who is traveling from San Francisco to Oregon with his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) and daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth). He has inherited his parents’ house in the middle of the ancient, mysterious forests of the Pacific Northwest.
When Blake, injured and distraught, awakens in his battered car after a car accident, the idyll turns into a monster’s hunting ground: a mysterious creature pounces on him. He survives the encounter, but the real horror begins afterwards: before the eyes of his frightened wife and daughter, the man is transformed into an animal.
As the trailer already promises, Wolf Man is supposed to create creepy images for a horror that a werewolf hasn’t caused in a long time. Thanks to Abbott (Possessor), Garner (The Royal Hotel) and Firth (Vampire Academy, Coma), there are three shocker specialists in front of the camera. But the real guarantee for success is hidden behind them.
Leigh Whannell is responsible for The Wolf Man, who has left a lasting impression on countless horror fans, especially with his screenplays. He wrote the script for the cult hit Saw and its first two sequels, all five previous Insidious films and the hard-hitting insider tip Upgrade. But he is remembered by many primarily for his outstanding directorial work on The Invisible Man, whose antagonist, like the Wolf Man, is one of Universal Studios’ monster pool.
Originally announced in 2014 as part of the so-called Dark Universe, Wolf Man is now coming to cinemas as a standalone film. It was produced by horror expert Jason Blum and Ryan Gosling, who was previously considered for the lead role.
