In the top 10 of Netflix’s movie charts, a horror thriller that was recently added to the program is now at the top. It displaces the stubborn front runner Carry-On.
At Netflix, flopped or (almost) forgotten films often get a second lease on life. This is currently the case with the horror thriller Ma, which was released in theaters in 2019. Probably very few of you will have thought of the film again in recent years, if you saw it at all.
The Blumhouse production has just been released on Netflix’s streaming service – and has immediately dethroned the previous front-runner Carry-On.

In the film by director Tate Taylor, a group of teenagers ask Sue Ann (Octavia Spencer), who lives alone in a small town, to buy them alcohol. The woman not only fulfills the teens’ request, but invites them to party in her basement. However, the group quickly realizes that something is wrong with Sue Ann.

Ma comes across as a slow-paced psychological horror that escalates more and more violently towards an excessive finale. In particular, lead actress Octavia Spencer, who is otherwise known from dramas like The Help and Hidden Figures, is frightening in the role of the opaque psychopath who, in her rage, can no longer be stopped.
In the Moviepilot community, Ma gets a rather mediocre average rating of 5.4 out of 10 points in over 700 ratings. With a Netflix subscription, you can see the movie for yourself.
