Netflix hit Squid Game is supposed to end with season 3. But now the series creator has explained how he could imagine a sequel.
Season 2 of Squid Game took Netflix by storm and broke one record after another: Not only did the new season debut at number one on the streaming charts in all (!) 93 countries where Netflix is available, but the series also collected more views than the record holder Wednesday during its premiere week.
Given this incredible success, it is almost surprising that Squid Game is scheduled to end after just three seasons. However, as series creator Dong-hyuk Hwang has now revealed, the Squid Game universe could continue after the final season.
Squid Game creator could imagine a sequel to the Netflix hit as a spin-off
As Dong-hyuk Hwang revealed in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, he couldn’t imagine a traditional sequel to the story of Gi-hun. Instead, he sees potential in the stories of other characters:
Personally, I see the third season as the finale of the story. I believe that I have found a conclusion to the story that I wanted to tell about society through the character Seong Gi-hun. If I wanted to return to the world of Squid Game, it would be for other characters and other stories. Like a spin-off, maybe.
Dong-hyuk Hwang already formulated an idea for characters he could turn to in a possible spin-off:
The masked guards, for example. How did they get there? What do they do when they’re not working? Maybe something along those lines.
When is Squid Game season 3 coming to Netflix?
Whether we can actually expect a Squid Game spin-off after season 3 is still written in the stars. For now, we can look forward to the third season of the Netflix hit, which is expected to arrive on the streamer just a few months after season 2. Accordingly, the episodes are expected to land on Netflix as early as summer 2025.
In addition, a remake of the series in English is currently in the works, with Fight Club director David Fincher as the creative mind behind it. The reality show Squid Game: The Challenge is already in the starting blocks with a second season.
