Joaquin Phoenix plays Joe, a former soldier struggling with various traumas and mental health issues. Not exactly conducive to his mental health is the fact that the man for the rough job is making a living as a hitman. Flashbacks plague him again and again, consisting of memories of the war, his own childhood or more recent atrocities.
Suddenly, the troubled ex-marine is supposed to free the young daughter of his client from a kind of brothel where terrible things seem to take place. A simple mission that seems tailor-made for the uncompromising nature of this specialist. But it quickly turns out that he has become entangled in a more complicated affair than initially appeared.
Joaquin Phoenix pulls out all the stops in the unusual A Beautiful Day
Neither the main character Joe nor the movie A Beautiful Day itself takes prisoners, quite the opposite. Here you are dealing with a really nasty, powerful and mercilessly stoic film and protagonists who are neither squeamish with Joe’s countless adversaries nor with the audience.
It’s not even about the violence itself, which can often only be seen or hinted at indirectly – but that doesn’t make it any less horrific. The film’s depressive, devastatingly uncompromising nature is definitely not for the faint-hearted. In a disturbingly calm way, the entire genre of revenge thrillers is turned on its head here, and no one could pull it off better than Joaquin Phoenix does here.
However, the Joker star is not universally celebrated. While he won an Oscar for his role as Joker in the first part, Joker 2 was nominated for seven Golden Raspberries at the anti-Oscars.
