After several setbacks, the continuation of the story of Rey Skywalker finally seems to be back on track. Daisy Ridley, the leading actress, gives an update on the latest developments.
Two years ago, the Rey movie was announced at Star Wars Celebration in London. Since then, three screenwriters have left the project. George Nolfi is now the fourth writer working on the film – and perhaps he will be able to find the perfect story for the project, which has been given the working title New Jedi Order.
Daisy Ridley, who played Rey Skywalker in the prequel trilogy, is enthusiastic about Nolfi’s commitment. Even though she hasn’t yet seen the latest draft of the script, she is enthusiastic about the new writer who is supposed to get the troubled Rey film back on track.
Daisy Ridley gives an update on the New Jedi Order project
As part of the promotional tour for her new action thriller Cleaner, which is coming to theaters in the US on February 21, 2025, Ridley sat down for an interview with ComicBook.com. The conversation was not only about dangerous stunts, but also about the question of what the status quo of the Rey film is. Ridley replied:
: I haven’t read the latest version of the script yet, but I know what happens and I know the story. What feels really good is that George [Nolfi] is a phenomenal writer. Right now, we’re making sure that this story is told with the best script possible, and I think it’s definitely worth the wait.
Nolfi himself recently proved himself to be an absolute Star Wars expert by breaking down George Lucas’ films into their essential components, emphasizing the political impact in particular. Previously, he had written Ocean’s Twelve, The Bourne Ultimatum and The Plan, the latter he even directed.
When will the new Star Wars movie about Rey be released in theaters?
It will be quite some time before the Rey movie comes out. First, the script has to be finalized. Then the shooting can begin. Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who previously directed two episodes of the MCU series Ms. Marvel, which started in 2022, is still on board as director.
Obaid-Chinoy also has an exciting background that is rarely found among the filmmakers of a blockbuster of this magnitude: Not only does she come from the documentary field as a director. Away from moving images, Obaid-Chinoy worked as a journalist and campaigned against discrimination against women.
For a long time, it was assumed that the Star Wars film she directed would be released in December 2026. However, due to the script setbacks, this date is no longer likely to be realistic. Lucasfilm and Disney are keeping another Star Wars theatrical release date open for December 2027. This time frame seems more feasible.
