A new sci-fi series on Amazon sends Vikings star Alexander Ludwig into a post-apocalypse in which almost all humans have fallen victim to a disease.
The Walking Dead and The Last of Us are just two prominent examples of the numerous series that have taken audiences into exciting doomsday scenarios and post-apocalypses in recent years. The next end time is now beginning on Amazon: in the sci-fi series Life Without End, Vikings star Alexander Ludwig plays one of the last living humans trying to save his species from extinction.
The sci-fi series Life Without End wipes out almost all humans
Similar to The Walking Dead protagonist Rick Grimes, the main character Isherwood aka Ish (Alexander Ludwig) also wakes up in a completely changed world. After being bitten by a snake, he falls into a coma in a remote hut. When he returns home a few days later, he is horrified to discover that the world has ended in the meantime. In Life Without End, however, it is not a zombie virus, but a mysterious disease that has wiped out almost all of humanity.
Left to his own devices, Ish now wanders the world looking for survivors, while hopelessness and loneliness test his will to live. In contrast to other series apocalypses, Life Without End does not rely on survival action, but instead chooses a down-to-earth, human approach.
When Ish finally meets the survivor Emma (Jessica Frances Dukes), hope arises that humanity might not have to die out after all. Now the couple begins a multi-year odyssey to find a way to build a new civilization in the constantly decaying world around them.
Developed by Sully writer Todd Komarnicki, the sci-fi drama series is an adaptation of George R. Stewart’s 1949 novel Life Without End. The book is considered a milestone in post-apocalyptic fiction and even inspired Stephen King’s end-time epic The Stand.

The six-episode miniseries aired in the U.S. in December 2024 on MGM+ under the title Earth Abides. In Germany, Earth Abides started on February 14, 2025, on the Amazon channel MGM+ * with the first two episodes.
