What has Daisy Ridley been up to? She played Rey Skywalker in the most recent Star Wars trilogy. With only a few other films, Ridley was able to realize herself as much as she did with the neo-noir thriller, which follows in the footsteps of Alfred Hitchcock and premiered last year at the SXSW Film Festival. Ridley took on the leading role and contributed the story for the script. She also served as a producer.
Magpie tells the story of the wealthy married couple Anette (Daisy Ridley) and Ben (Shazad Latif), who have no worries in the world. Even their daughter Matilda (Hiba Ahmed) already has a career: she was cast as a child actress in a major film. Ben now drives her to the set every day.
Between the spotlights and cameras, the family man meets actress Alicia (Matilda Lutz), who lovingly takes care of Matilda and also takes a shine to Ben. Before he knows it, he finds himself in the middle of an affair – and Anette gradually gets wind of the matter.
Daisy Ridley adds another strong thriller performance to her filmography with Magpie
As is so often the case in these stories, the protagonist is initially not quite sure whether it is all really happening or whether she is misinterpreting various events. The more she deals with her husband’s affair, the more secrets come to light and Anette discovers an unexpectedly dark side of herself.
We won’t give away any more at this point, because Magpie thrives on the many moments of uncertainty in which a situation could develop in two different directions. Not to mention a twist in the finale that completely subverts expectations. Before that, there’s plenty of slow-burn suspense.
After the revenge thriller The Last of Us, Daisy Ridley now moves through the shadows of a psychological thriller that challenges her acting even more. With calm, cool eyes that mask an inner rage, she brings her Anette to life before the strict character loses more and more control.
